چکیده
Velocity dispersion σ, radius R and luminosity L of elliptical galaxies are known to be related, leaving only two degrees of freedom and defining the so-called “fundamental plane”. In this Letter we present observational evidence that rich galaxy clusters exhibit a similar behaviour. Assuming a relation L ∝ Rασ2β, the best-fit values of α and β are very close to those defined by galaxies. The dispersion of this relation is lower than 10 percent, i.e. significantly smaller than the dispersion observed in the L − σ and L − R relations. We briefly suggest some possible implications on the spread of formation times of objects and on peculiar velocities of galaxy clusters.

Galaxy clusters are important targets for peculiar velocity studies as a direct comparison of the various distance indicators can be made. The potential problem of an environmental effect biasing the distances to clusters of different richness is examined. The level of intrinsic cluster-to-cluster variations is also reviewed. We investigate the claim that the derived Fundamental Plane (FP) dist...

Most gravitational lens galaxies are early-type galaxies in relatively low density environments. We show that they lie on the same fundamental plane as early-type galaxies in both local and distant rich clusters. Their surface brightness evolution requires a typical star formation epoch of z f ≃ 2-3, almost indistinguishable from that of rich cluster galaxies at comparable redshifts. The restri...

The EFAR project has measured peculiar motions in two distant volumes of the universe using Fundamental Plane (FP) distances for 85 clusters with 6000 km s −1 <cz<15000 km s −1. The scatter in distance about the FP is observed to be 20% per galaxy for EFAR sample, resulting in peculiar velocities with a median precision of 1075 km s −1 for the 50 clusters with 3 or more galaxies. We find that t...

We have fit the fundamental plane (FP) to early-type galaxies in 20 nearby clusters (cz ∼ 4000 − 11000 km s −1) using our own photometry and spectroscopy as well as measurements culled from the literature. We find that the quality-of-fit to the average fundamental plane (FP) varies by a factor of two among these clusters. About half the clusters fit the FP well, 0.05 ∼ < r.m.s.[log(σ)] ∼ < 0.07...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and the distribution of the baryons is gal...
